3 Red Flags to Look Out for During Your Initial Consultation

Your initial consultation with a lawyer is often a make or break situation. That means you need to be on the lookout for potential signs that any immigration attorney, divorce attorney, or criminal defense attorney you're meeting with isn't really with you on this case. Here are a few of those red flags you need to be on the lookout for.

Not Listening
An attorney at law should always make an effort to listen to your account of the situation. In fact, that's the most important part of your initial consultation because it's what they'll be representing you for. If it seems like your attorney isn't listening to you or really paying attention to your story, that should be an immediate red flag. Some other signs of not listening to look out for include an attorney seeming distracted and asking you to repeat what you just said. You should be able to recount your story and ask questions to an alert, attentive attorney who will respond to you accordingly.

No Compassion
If you've recently been involved in a legal situation, it may be difficult for you to make decisions solely based on facts. Especially in situations like divorce, emotions may run high and it's important for your attorney to recognize those emotions and then help you make calm, rational decisions. While it's still important for you to present your case with the facts, it's equally as important to hire a lawyer who recognizes emotional bias and can work around that to prove the facts of your case.

Lack of Preparedness
If a lawyer comes unprepared to your initial consultation, that's an immediate red flag. Legal costs for litigation range from $3,000 to $150,000, and if you're trusting a lawyer with a case that big, they should be prepared from the moment you meet to the moment your case ends. During an initial consultation, an attorney should be able to answer your legal questions and provide apt legal counsel.

Whether you're going through a divorce or you're filing a workers' compensation claim, don't forget that the initial consultation is just as important as any other legal meeting you'll have.
