What exactly is asylum?

There have been a lot of stories in the major news outlets over the past few weeks discussing asylum and the Administration's attempts to change the process. However, some people in the Harrisonburg area may not fully understand what exactly asylum is.

There may even be some in the area who are eligible to seek asylum but may not know how to do so.

Claiming asylum can actually be a complicated process that, at a minimum, involves completing some detailed paperwork and being prepared to make one's case to the authorities that he or she is in fact eligible for asylum. Because it is a complicated process, an immigration attorney in Virginia may be the best source for locals to get their questions answered.

That being said, however, asylum is in general a process by which those who are suffering some form of persecution can be allowed to stay in the United States without fear of removal from the country.

The person seeking asylum must officially do so within one year of arriving on United States soil, and they must be able to show that, if they are sent back to their native county, they will be persecuted on account of race, religion, social status, nationality or even choice of politics.

In other words, the asylum process is a way the United States protects those from other countries who can prove they either are or will otherwise be the victims of unjust treatment.

It is possible for someone who is granted asylum to take a job in this country and even to relocate some of his or her relatives here. However, the first step is to get asylum granted in the first place so that a person can stay in the country without the fear of being forced to leave.
